Origin and history

Lantilly Castle is a neo-classical building built in 1709 on the foundations of an older structure, located on the eastern edge of the village of Lantilly, in the Gold Coast. This monument illustrates the aristocratic architecture of the early eighteenth century, with a main building body oriented north-south, supplemented by outbuildings (granges, stables) and a vegetable garden. Two square towers, vestiges of an earlier era, frame the entrance, although their condition has deteriorated over time.

In 1794, the estate consists of a coherent set: the central castle, agricultural buildings, and a large structured park. The facades and roofs were protected in 1968, followed by the classification of interiors in 1995 and the registration of the park in 1994. The latter, blending French and English styles, offers views of Alesia and the Laume Valley, while its thematic gardens (rose grove, vegetable garden labeled "remarkable garden") reflect a neat horticultural tradition.

The present castle rests partly on an escarpment where remains a massive north tower, probably vestige of a medieval fortress. Since 1775, the estate has belonged to the same family, preserving a typical 18th century interior. The valorisation of the heritage also involves areas such as an orangery, a greenhouse, and massifs of both wood and wood, organizing harmoniously the different areas of the garden.

The successive protections (1968, 1994, 1995) highlight the historical and architectural value of the site. The vegetable garden, in particular, is distinguished for its landscape and botanical quality, while the whole estate bears witness to continuous occupation and stylistic adaptations throughout the centuries. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its anchoring in local and regional heritage.
