Origin and history
The Château-Couture de Migron, located in the department of Charente-Maritime, finds its origins in the 13th century in the form of a defensive tower protecting the surrounding marshes. The current building, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, stands on a rectangular, moat-covered ground and presents a U-shaped plan. The moats are lined with parapets and balusters, while the posterior elevation of the central house body overlooks a terrace. The structure preserves Renaissance elements, such as today's clogged archatures, as well as a 19th century chapel in the right wing.
The oldest part of the castle, including a square tower, a screw staircase and 15th century bays, is located in the east corner. The central house body houses living rooms of the late eighteenth century and a stone staircase with a wrought iron ramp dated 1774. The monument was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 13 November 1989, thus protecting its facades, roofs, courtyard, portal piles, balustrades and moat.
The castle, whose exact address is 88 Mathalian Route to Migron, illustrates the architectural evolution of the defense castles towards more comfortable residences, typical of the Poitou-Charentes region. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments underlines its heritage importance, while allowing its preservation for future generations.
