Origin and history

The castle of Aillas, located on the municipality of the same name in Gironde, finds its origins in a building attributed to the wisigoth Waillas, destroyed by the Normans in the 9th century. Reconstructed, it became a property of the Albret family, and in 1607 was exchanged by Henry IV for the principality of Sedan. This castle, already damaged during the wars of the League (1585-1595), undergoes major demolitions during the Fronde (1650-1653), notably due to the involvement of the Duke of Bouillon in the Bordeaux rebellion.

In 1793, the enclosure of the castle was almost entirely demolished, leaving today a single isolated wall. These ruins, located north of the village along the D9 departmental road, were classified as historical monuments by order of 12 July 1886. The site, known as The City, bears witness to a turbulent history marked by political and military conflicts.

The castle of Aillas illustrates the architectural and strategic transformations of medieval fortresses in Aquitaine, while reflecting the power struggles between noble families and the French crown. Its gradual decline, accelerated by the revolts of the seventeenth century and the Revolution, makes it a symbol of the historical upheavals of the region.
