Origin and history

The castle of Airoux, located in the department of Aude in Airoux, is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It represents a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture, although only part of the primitive ensemble remains today. The castle was initially surrounded by buildings on three sides, with an entrance courtyard preceded by a drawbridge, now demolished. Two external defensive elements are still visible: an oval gunboat near the entrance and the base of a scallop at the northwest corner.

The construction of the present castle is attributed to Barthélémy de Buisson, a member of a family that acquired the seigneury in the early 16th century. The seigneury of Airoux, originally a royal domain, was infused at the Fountains in 1310, then engaged at the Baylie in the 15th century before passing to the Du Buissons. The octagonal staircase turret, adorned with a door with doric architecture, is a notable architectural element. It features metopes decorated with roses and bucranes, surmounted by denticles and a circular pediment.

The original stone staircase was replaced by a wooden and brick screw, while access to the terrace was by a small outside turret. In 1948, the gate of the stair turret was classified as historical monuments. In the 20th century, the castle belonged to Mr.Grillères. Despite the partial modifications and disappearances, the castle retains traces of its defensive and residential past, illustrating the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The external defenses, although partially disappeared, recall the initial fortified aspect of the castle. The oval gunboat and the base of the scallop, with its brick superstructure, bear witness to the military adaptations of the time. The set, though small, offers an overview of the spatial organization and construction techniques of the castles of this period in Occitanie.

The castle of Airoux is part of a historical context marked by the transitions between feudality and modern times. The seigneury, passed between several noble families, reflects the political and social changes in the region. Its partial classification as a historical monument underscores its heritage and architectural importance, while preserving a fragment of local and regional history.
