Origin and history

The château d'Albigny-sur-Saône is an ancient castle built at the end of the 12th or early 13th century, on a castral motte. Its construction began around 1173, according to available sources. This monument illustrates medieval military architecture, with a square dungeon typical of this period, joined to a later renovated home. It is one of the few castles to have preserved its heavy, defensive wooden elements located at the top of the walls, dating from its medieval origin.

Over the centuries, the castle has undergone major transformations, especially during the Renaissance and the 19th century, adapting its appearance to the tastes and needs of each era. These changes have altered the home, while preserving medieval elements such as the dungeon. The castle occupies a dominant position in the municipality of Albigny-sur-Saône, in the metropolis of Lyon, highlighting its historic strategic role.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 6 February 1942, the castle of Albigny-sur-Saône is now the property of the commune. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and its history. The site thus combines traces of medieval fortification and more recent additions, offering a panorama of the evolution of castles in France.

Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, also mention its precise address: 5 Montée du Vieux Château, in Albigny-sur-Saône. The castle is associated with the Merimée base, which lists the French historical monuments, confirming its importance in the local and regional heritage.
