Origin and history

The castle of Artiguères, located in Benquet in the Landes, dates from 1872. He occupied an estate of 20 hectares at the place called Artiguères, already mentioned on the Napoleonic cadastre of 1811. Although located in Benquet, it was accessible from the station of Haut-Mauco, located about a kilometre away, on the railway line between Dax and Mont-de-Marsan.

In the 20th century, the castle housed the School of Agricultural Household Education of the Landes, offering free one-year training to 14-year-old farmers' daughters. The goal was to teach them technical skills to manage a home and support their future husbands in agricultural work. The studies were awarded a State diploma by the Ministry of Agriculture.

From October 1963, the castle hosted the Women's Agricultural College of the Landes, created under the Modernisation of Agricultural Education Act 1960. This college prepared the students, aged 13-14, for the certificate of agricultural education for women. It was intended for girls in grades 5 and 5.
