Origin and history
Assay Castle, located in Beaulieu-sur-Loire in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a historical monument dating back to the 15th and 18th centuries. It is one of the last vestiges of the defensive system established by the king of Bourges on the banks of the Loire, and the only example maintaining a homogeneous architectural character. The building, surrounded by water, adopts a rectangular shape pierced by a door formerly equipped with a drawbridge, now extinct. Its defensive elements, such as the scalables, the mâchicoulis and the peg tower housing the guard room, illustrate its initial military role. The house, on the other hand, preserves a vaulted cellar, while a round road covered with a frame surrounds the outbuildings.
The structure of the castle reflects a dual vocation, both defensive and residential. The Porch Tower, equipped with schauguers and turrets, emphasizes its strategic importance in the river protection network. The elements protected by the decree of 25 October 1957 – exterior walls, round road, tower, dungeon, house, chapel and dovecote – testify to the architectural richness of the site. Although the castle is now partially open (visits, rentals or guest rooms not specified in the sources), its rectangle plan girded with water and its defence devices make it a remarkable example of the castral architecture of the Loire.
Available sources, including Monumentum, point to the average accuracy of its location (level 6/10), with an administrative address in Beaulieu-sur-Loire (Loiret), although GPS coordinates suggest a proximity to Saint-Jean-de-Braye. This minor geographical difference does not alter its status as an emblematic monument of the Ligerian defences, classified among the buildings protected from French heritage.
