Origin and history

Auzers Castle, located in the department of Cantal in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a medieval building rebuilt between 1470 and 1510 on the foundations of a 14th century castle. Although its structure preserves a defensive spirit typical of the Middle Ages, with a body of rectangular houses flanked by towers and stalls, it incorporates architectural elements of the Renaissance, such as an independent staircase tower crowned with mâchicoulis. Inside, the castle houses a variety of decorations, including a monumental fireplace, 18th and 19th century woodwork, and an oratory decorated with 16th century murals, classified as historical monuments.

The seigneury of Auzers was attested as early as 1364, owned by Bernard de Marlat, and then transmitted by marriage to the Bompar family in the 15th century. Blandin Bompar, lord of Auzers and administrator of the Count of Boulogne, oversees the construction of the castle of Madic. His grandson, Gabriel de Douhet d'Auzers, lieutenant of the king in Haute-Auvergne, undertook the reconstruction of the castle of Auzers in its present form. The estate has since remained in the progeny of this lineage, which continues to own it.

Partially classified as historical monuments since 1983 for its facades, roofs and murals, the castle has its interior and outbuildings registered in 2002. The protected decorations include emblematic rooms such as the weapons room, the oratory, or rooms with evocative names (Empire room, Polish room). Open to the public from Easter to Toussaint, the site also offers thematic exhibitions, including one dedicated to lead soldiers of the Great War.
