Origin and history

The castle of Avejan is a building located in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Maruejols-et-Avéjan, in the Gard department, in the Occitan region. This monument, whose exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources, was inscribed under the title of Historical Monuments by order of March 22, 2018. The protected elements include facades, roofs, a stairwell with a guard room, as well as the wall and floor of adjoining plots, with the exception of the swimming pool.

The castles of this region, often built between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, served as seigneurial residences or strategic defence points. They were usually surrounded by walls to protect the inhabitants from external attacks. In the local context, these monuments played a central role in social and economic organization, often hosting agricultural or artisanal activities related to rural life at the time.

The castle of Avejan, by its recent inscription, bears witness to the desire to preserve this architectural and historical heritage for future generations.
