Origin and history
The Château d'Ecutigny was built in the 15th century, with a stronghold attested from 1450, built on a 12th century castral motte built on a Gallo-Roman site. From this medieval era, there is today only a tower and a turret housing a staircase with screws, witness to the ancient defensive function of the place. These remains mark the imprint of a fortress designed to control the local territory, typical of the seigneurial constructions of the late Middle Ages in Burgundy.
The major reconstruction of the castle took place in the 17th century, as evidenced by two engraved stones dated 1632 and 1646. This site transforms the old stronghold into a residence more in line with the classical architectural cannons of the period, with interior and exterior fittings (doves, bridges, forecourt) that continue until the eighteenth century. The interior decorations, especially those of the large salon classified in 1994, reflect this evolution towards a place of aristocratic representation, far from its original military vocation.
The estate is organized around a body of houses surrounded by ditches, accessible by a planted alley and a stone bridge flanked by 18th century pillars. Among the remarkable elements are a vaulted cradle basement, an inner well under the porch, and a round dovecote integrated into the commons. Nearby, a 19th century impluvium washhouse, a fountain and the remains of a lime oven recall the agricultural and artisanal activities related to the castle. The ensemble, partially protected as historical monuments since 1992, illustrates the superimposition of times and usages, from military to residential.
The history of the castle of Ecutigny is part of that of the castles of Côte-d'Or, where the local lords have gradually abandoned fortifications in favour of more comfortable residences, while preserving symbols of their past power. Its classification and its inscription among historical monuments underline its heritage value, both architectural (mix of styles) and historical (witness of the evolution of the Burgundy elites).
