Origin and history

The Château d'Erbrée, located in Fromentières in the department of Mayenne, is an emblematic monument of the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Its sober architecture, of neo-classical style, replaces an old house in L surrounded by moat, visible on the cadastre of 1833. The transition between the two structures took place between 1830 and 1835, during which time new constructions and plantations radically transformed the estate, requiring significant earth movements.

The Erbrée fief, attested since the beginning of the 14th century, bears witness to an ancient occupation of the site. The present castle, accompanied by its buildings of communes ( stables, vegetable garden, kennel, henhouse) and a landscaped park, retains its original distributions. These elements, as well as the western access road, have been protected since the monument was added to the Historic Monuments by order of 8 July 2010.

The demolition of the old house, which began in February 1835, marks an architectural break with the medieval history of the fief. The new castle, sober and functional, reflects the aesthetic tastes and practical needs of the 19th-century earth bourgeoisie in the Pays de la Loire. Its park, designed in the spirit of English landscaped gardens, integrates harmoniously into the rural landscape of Mayen.
