Origin and history

The château d'Hauterives, located in the Drôme department, has its origins in the 12th century. Originally, it was a strong castle dominating the village, but it collapsed around 1650. It was at the same time that a new castle was built on the left bank of the Galaure, marking an architectural transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era.

The present castle houses a remarkable park, where stands a three-hundred-year-old Lebanese cedar up to 35 metres high. This place, now owned by the municipality, now hosts temporary exhibitions in rooms decorated with 17th century woodwork and 18th century stucco mouldings. These decorative elements bear witness to the evolution of artistic styles throughout the centuries.

In 1926, the fortified gate of the castle was classified as Historic Monument by decree, highlighting its heritage importance. More recently, in the spring of 2024, the castle experienced major structural problems, requiring the installation of beams to support its exterior walls and avoid collapse. This work illustrates the contemporary challenges of preserving historical heritage.

The castle is located near the Ideal Palace of the Horse Factor, another emblematic monument of the region, in the Drôme des Collines. This location reinforces its tourist and cultural appeal, while anchoring the site in a rich historical and natural landscape. The castle, now managed by the municipality, plays an active role in local life by offering exhibition spaces and cultural events.
