Origin and history

Heilly Castle, situated on horseback in the communes of Heilly and Ribemont-sur-Ancre (Somme), was a hybrid building combining feudal elements and a neoclassical reconstruction of the eighteenth century. According to legend, he sheltered Ganelon, character of Roland's Song, judged and executed in 778 after the battle of Roncevaux. The castle was a place of power for the lords of Heilly, involved in major events such as the battles of Bouvines (1214) and d'Azincourt (1415), or life in the court of Francis I.

In the 18th century, the Marquis Louis-Charles de Gouffier entrusted his reconstruction to the architect Pierre Contant of Ivry, who erected a body of neo-classical houses while preserving medieval elements (rounds, ditches). The park, adorned with iron grids forged by Jean Veyren, became a landscaping model. The interior, rearranged in a rock style, included sumptuous salons, a chapel blessed in 1756, and seigneurial apartments. The castle served as a residence for Anne de Pisseleu, the favourite of François I, who lived there after 1547 and died there in 1580.

Fired in 1553 and 1636 by the Spanish armies, the castle was repaired before being partially demolished after its sale in 1848. Its decorative elements (grills, woodwork, sculptures) were dispersed: some grids now adorn the castles of Bertangles and Digoine, while statues of Nicolas Sébastien Adam are preserved at the Picardie Museum in Amiens. The estate, now divided between private and communal owners, has retained protected remains since 2001: terraces, orangery, canal, and a pavilion threatened with ruin.

The legend of Ganelon, the links with the court of France, and the partial destruction in the 19th century make the castle d'Heilly a mythical and tragic symbol of Picard heritage. Since 2021, a re-enactment into virtual reality allows us to rediscover its past fascist, while the material remains (talus, walls, bassyard) still testify to its historical importance.

Successive noble families (Créqui, Bailleul, Gouffier, Chabrillan) marked its history, as did exceptional artisans such as Contant d'Ivry or Jean Veyren. The artistic quality of the decorations, sold in 1846, illustrates the cultural influence of the castle before its fall. Today, the site, though fragmentary, remains a place of classified memory, where eight centuries of history overlap, from feudality to modern times.
