Origin and history

Château d'Orfeuille is a building located in the commune of Gourgé, in the Deux-Sèvres department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This castle, originally dating back to the 17th century, underwent partial restorations in the 19th century. Its architecture thus reflects the influences of these two epochs, mixing classical elements with more recent additions.

The castle has been listed as historic monuments since 3 June 1996, an official recognition of its heritage value. This protection preserves its architectural and historical characteristics for future generations.

The castles of this region, such as that of Orfeuille, were often centres of social and economic life for local communities. They served as residences for noble or bourgeois families, while playing a role in the organization of surrounding land and agricultural activities. Their presence also marked the landscape and the history of villages, such as Gourgé, where they were strong identifiers.
