Origin and history

The castle of Balleure, located in Etrigny en Saône-et-Loire, is a historic monument registered since 1941. On a rectangular plane, it is bounded by circular towers and includes a house in the east, a peg tower to the north, and a tower of stairs to the west. Although private property and not open to the classic visit, it now offers accommodation and catering services.

In the middle of the thirteenth century, the land belonged to the family of Sauvement. In 1340, Henri de Sauvement obtained permission from the Duke of Burgundy to strengthen his house with walls and ditches. The castle then passed to the hands of the Rabutin d'Epiry in the 14th century, then to the family of Saint-Julien in the early 15th century. In 1519 Pierre de Saint-Julien de Balleur was born there, a notable historian.

In 1613, the castle was transferred to Charles de Nature, remaining in this family until the Revolution. In 1767, François-Emmanuel de Naturel undertook a partial restoration. After sharing between owners in the 19th century, the estate was acquired in 2014 by Mrs.Amarante Puget and Mr.Raoul Salama, who in 2017 developed tourist activities through the company Château de Balleure SAS.
