Origin and history
The castle of Baure, located in Orthez in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a house originally built in the 16th century. This large rectangular building, supported by a tower with a spiral staircase, was later enlarged, reflecting architectural developments and the needs of its occupants throughout the centuries. Its interior decor, reworked between the 18th and 20th centuries, bears witness to these successive adaptations.
The estate extends around a park where there is an access bridge, outbuildings, a mill and a noble house, characteristic elements of a rural estate in Belarus from the 17th and 19th centuries. These structures, associated with the main home, illustrate the spatial and economic organization of the aristocratic or bourgeois properties of the region. The mill and dependencies, in particular, underline the productive autonomy of these areas in the modern era.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 12 September 2005, the castle of Baure sees the protection extended to its home, its access bridge, its park, its gate, its mill and its outbuildings. This inscription recognizes the heritage value of an architectural and landscape ensemble representative of the rural and seigneurial history of Béarn, between the Ancient Regime and the contemporary era.
