Origin and history

The castle of Beaufort-en-Vallée, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire on the same name, is a medieval vestige of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its ruins, partially preserved, illustrate the transition between the primitive castral mounds and the stone constructions characteristic of this period. The building was profoundly restructured during these two centuries, marking the evolution of the defensive and residential techniques of the time.

Ranked among the historical monuments by decree of 27 January 1951, the site now belongs to the commune of Beaufort-en-Vallée. The original castral motte, typical of medieval fortifications, was transformed to accommodate stone buildings, reflecting Beaufort's strategic status in the Angelvine region. Although the available sources do not specify the sponsors or significant events related to this castle, its listing as historic monuments underscores its heritage importance.

The location of the castle, mentioned in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 49021, places this monument in the heart of the Pays de la Loire, in a territory marked by feudal history. The available coordinates, although of an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allow to locate the ruins near the current city centre. The absence of details on its contemporary use (visits, rental, accommodation) suggests a mainly heritage and tourist vocation, without proven commercial exploitation.
