Origin and history

The castle of Belcastel, located in the Aude in the Occitan region, is mentioned for the first time in 1082 under the name Castellum Pulchrum, although this reference may concern another castle. Its historical role remains unclear, especially during the Albigois Crusade, despite its proximity to Cathar fortresses. No written record mentions him after 1221, leaving a mystery on his subsequent occupation.

The architecture of the castle, marked by a square dungeon and a fortified enclosure, suggests a prolonged occupation beyond the 13th century, despite a lack of significant defensive elements. Today in ruins, it overlooks the Buc River at 500 meters above sea level. A chapel and cemetery, located below, complete the site, which seems to be freely accessible despite the risks of falling stones.

Although private, the castle could appear on the coat of arms of the village of Belcastel-et-Buc. Its present state and its fragmentary history make it an enigmatic testimony of the Occitan medieval heritage, distinct from the other castles of the Aude by its absence of records after the 13th century.
