Origin and history
The Château de Bellegarde, located in the municipality of Lamonzie-Montastruc in the Dordogne department, has its origins in the 14th century. Built on a rocky spur, it was initially dependent on Montastruc Castle. This first building, from plan to U, today retains some remarkable elements such as gemini windows and a stair tower, testimonies of its medieval past.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several major changes. It was completely rebuilt in the 19th century, then between 1910 and 1912, during which time its interior decorations were also modernized. This work has profoundly altered its original appearance, while integrating contemporary architectural elements. The castle has been listed as historical monuments since 5 January 2006.
The estate also includes a park designed by landscape architect Gabriel Perdoux, as well as pigeons, both protected as historical monuments. These exterior spaces, as well as the interior redevelopments of the 20th century, illustrate the evolution of the tastes and uses of a seigneurial residence transformed into a more modern residence.
The Château de Bellegarde thus embodies a synthesis between medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations, reflecting the architectural needs and styles of different periods, from the 14th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
