Origin and history
The Château de Bellevue is an emblematic building located in Saint-Didier-sur-Chalaronne, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built on a site with an exceptional view of Beaujolais, it stands out for its English-style park of more than 3 hectares, decorated with rare and centuries-old essences such as araucarias or weeping cedars. This park, classified among the remarkable gardens of Rhône-Alpes, also houses a piece of water built under Napoleon III, fed by a source from the cellars of the castle.
The present building incorporates a wing added in 1880 to an older structure, of which only the kitchen remains today, characterized by its original beams and tile. The estate offers panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, and in clear weather, until Mont Blanc. The Aynes family, originally from Switzerland, is mentioned as heiress of the castle, although the details of this transmission or its previous history are not specified in the available sources.
Bellevue Castle illustrates 19th-century architecture and landscaping, with influences marked by the romantic tendencies of the time. Its park, designed according to the principles of the English landscaped gardens, reflects the taste for landscaped natural spaces, where nature and artifice blend harmoniously. The presence of elements such as the water room, typical of the aristocratic or bourgeois properties of this period, underscores the residential and aesthetic character of the estate.
