Origin and history

The castle of Belloy-Saint-Léonard, located in the department of the Somme, finds its origins in the meeting of the seigneuries of Belloy and Saint-Lénard in 1375, following the marriage of Enguerran de Belloy with Jeanne de Saint-Liénard. This estate remained in the Belloy family until the end of the 17th century, when François de Belloy-Saint-Léonard sold it to Gabriel Roussel. It was under the impulse of Jacques Roussel de Belloy, treasurer of France, that the present castle was built at the end of the eighteenth century, thus marking the architectural climax of the site.

In the 19th century, the castle changed hands by marriage, passing to the Morgan family of Belloy. Around 1890 it became the property of Count Adrien de Hauteclocque by inheritance. This historic place is particularly famous for its birth on 22 November 1902, Philippe de Hauteclocque, future Marshal Leclerc, emblematic figure of the Liberation of France during the Second World War. The castle, which was listed as a historic monument in 1986, now maintains a park of nine hectares and a private forest of 100 hectares, partially accessible to the public.

Architecturally, the castle is distinguished by its long body of rectangular houses, flanked by two wings in return of square and surmounted by a triangular pediment decorated with the arms of the Roussel de Belloy. Built of white stone, it rises on three levels, one under the attic. Since 2021, the estate has diversified its uses by becoming a welcoming place for business seminars, while preserving its historical and family heritage.
