Origin and history

The Château de Belon is a historical monument located in the commune of Riec-sur-Bélon, in the department of Finistère (29), in Brittany. This estate consists of a main house dating from the 18th century, a 19th century pavilion, and a chapel. The whole is complemented by gardens, fence walls, an oyster store and concessionary oyster basins on the Bélon, reflecting local economic activity related to osteoculture.

The estate was registered as a Historic Monument by order of 11 May 2017. This protection covers not only buildings, but also landscape elements and infrastructure related to oyster exploitation, emphasizing the heritage and cultural importance of the site. The location of the castle near the Bélon River is closely associated with this traditional activity in the region.

The protected elements also include land parcels and fence walls, as well as oyster basins located on the maritime public domain. These details show that the Château de Belon is not only an aristocratic residence, but also a testimony to the economic and social history of Brittany, especially through the osteoculture, a major resource for local communities for centuries.

Although information on the precise origins of the castle or its historic owners is not mentioned in the available sources, its architecture and integration into a landscape marked by shellfish farming make it an emblematic site. The presence of a chapel and a garden delimited by architectural elements also suggests a residential, religious and utilitarian dimension, typical of the great Breton estates.

Today, the Château de Belon is recognized for its built and natural heritage, as well as its link with local traditions. Its classification as a Historical Monument preserves this whole and enhances its role in regional history, between architectural heritage and memory of past and present economic activities.
