Origin and history
The Château de Béneauville is a 17th-century building located in Moult-Chicheboville, Calvados department, Normandy. Built in the first half of the 17th century, it is 600 metres northwest of Notre-Dame Church, on the former commune of Béneauville, built in Chicheboville in 1835, and then in the new commune of Moult-Chicheboville in 2017. This castle illustrates the aristocratic residential architecture of the modern era in Lower Normandy.
The facades, roofs and park of the castle have been listed as historical monuments since 17 April 1952. This classification reflects the heritage value of the building, although its documented history remains brief. Arcisse de Caumont mentioned, around 1850, that Ms. Fribois occupied the site, offering a rare glimpse of her occupation in the 19th century.
The castle is part of a regional context marked by post-Renaissance reconstruction, where local elites build residences reflecting their status. In Normandy, these castles often served as administrative centres or resorts for noble families, while participating in the economic organization of the surrounding agricultural estates. Their architecture combines local tradition and classical influences, typical of the 17th century French.
