Origin and history
Bossay Castle, located in the municipality of Bossay-sur-Claise (Indre-et-Loire), is an ancient fortress dating back to the 12th century. It was part of a network of fortifications built in the 11th century to secure the region. This monument illustrates medieval defensive architecture, with a dungeon and a house of the late twelfth century, little modified since the sixteenth century. Its original arrangements, such as the geminated bays or the structure of the building, testify to its historical importance.
According to tradition, the fortress was restored in 1350, then destroyed by the English before being rebuilt in the 15th century. Subsequent transformations, such as the addition of a polygonal stair tower or angle scauguettes, reflect the architectural evolutions of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The castle, listed as a historical monument in 1995, is representative of the Romanesque residences of the small lords of the time.
The house retains remarkable decorative and structural elements, such as curved arches and chimneys added later. Although partially modified, the building offers an overview of medieval lifestyles and construction techniques. Today, there remains a tangible testimony of local history and the evolution of fortifications in Touraine.
