Origin and history

Château de Boucherolles is a castle built in the second half of the 16th century, in the commune of Tréban, in the department of Allier (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). This monument is distinguished by its architecture typical of the late Renaissance, with a body of rectangular houses flanked by two round towers to the west, accompanied by a building of communes and a dovecote. The facades and roofs, characteristic of the Bourbon style with their flat tiles and very high panels, were partially protected by an inscription as historical monuments in 1973.

The French-style gardens, still visible today, complement this architectural ensemble, reflecting the social status of its original owners, probably local gentlemen. The castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences at the end of the Renaissance, where comfort and aesthetics took a growing place, while preserving symbolic defensive elements such as round towers. Its dovecote, a common feature in the rural areas of the time, also bears witness to the economic importance of agriculture and seigneurial rights.

The partial inscription of the castle in 1973 allowed to preserve its most remarkable elements, including the facades and roofs of the main house and the buildings of the communes. This protection is part of a broader desire to safeguard the rural architectural heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, often marked by influences both bourbonnais and Renaissance. Today, the site remains a representative example of recreational residences built by the little provincial nobility at the hinge of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
