Origin and history

Bretteville Castle is an 18th-century residence built around 1715 by Albert-Louis Asselin, Louis XV's advisor, on the municipality of Bretteville-Saint-Laurent in the Seine-Maritime. The building, of classic style, is distinguished by its body of rectangular house flanked by two wings, a courtyard of honor lined with dry moat, and gardens structured with a hopper. An avenue planted with three rows of trees leads to the castle, while an old chapel, integrated into the estate, now serves as a parish church.

In 1729, the estate was acquired by Louis-Marie Duhamel de Bretteville, Marquis d'Oissel and President of the Normandie Parliament, for £291,000. By alliance, he then moved to Armand Thomas Hue de Miromesnil, custody of the seals under Louis XVI, and then to Paul Charles Cardin Le Bret de Flacourt, Advocate General in Parliament. The castle reached its peak in the 1750s, when it embodied the prestige of the great parliamentarians of the Old Regime. The decorative elements, such as a fireplace and the park gate, bear the dates 1730 and 1732, confirming this construction phase.

The estate remains in the same family by successive inheritances: Alfred de La Motte-Ango de Flers (Marquis de Flers), Henry Le Compasseur Créqui-Montfort de Courtivron (Vicomte), and André Le Compasseur Créqui-Montfort de Courtivron (Comte). In 1989, he was bought by Alain-Xavier de Chavagnac, Count of Chavagnac, whose descendants are now the owners. The castle, partially protected since 1991 (registration) and 1992 (classification), is open to the public and retains its original architecture, including communes and gardens.

Built in sandstone and pink bricks, the castle illustrates the classic Norman architecture of the eighteenth century. Its rectangular plan, flag wings, and outbuildings (service wing, office building) reflect a spatial organization typical of the aristocratic residences of the time. The chapel, the dry moats, and the planted avenue complete a remarkably preserved ensemble, bearing witness to the way of life of the parliamentary elites during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI.

The protections under the title of historical monuments cover the entire castle (excluding contemporary amenities), the court of honor, the gardens with their fences, and the avenue planted. The facades and roofs of buildings have been classified since 1992, highlighting the heritage value of this site. Today, the castle visits from 15 July to 31 August, and hosts groups by appointment the rest of the year.
