The facades and roofs of the castle; the dovecote in full (Case 080B 217): inscription by order of 26 August 1988

Origin and history

The Château de Bruthières, located in the commune of Thonnance-les-Moulins (Haute-Marne), is a building built in the 18th century. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its typical architecture of this period, with facades and emblematic roofs. Its dovecote, also protected, shows the economic and social importance of this type of building in the rural areas of the period.

The location of the castle is specified with an address to 5 Route de Germay, in the department of Haute-Marne (52), in the Grand Est region. The site has a "very satisfactory" location (note of 8/10), which facilitates its identification and access. The protected elements of the castle, namely its facades, roofs and dovecot, were inscribed by ministerial decree on 26 August 1988, thus highlighting their heritage value.

The château de Bruthières is part of a historical context where castles and rural estates played a central role in the social and economic organization of the countryside. In the 18th century, the Haute-Marne, like other French regions, was marked by an agrarian society where local lords and landowners strongly influenced the lives of the surrounding communities. Pigeons, often associated with castles, symbolized seigneurial law and also served as indicators of wealth and power.
