Origin and history

The castle of Cargouët, located on a fief dependent on Lamballe, was recorded in 1896 by historian Froutier de la Messelière. At that time, the ensemble consisted of a house, a chapel, a dovecote, two entrance pavilions, commons and moats. Today, only the eastern part of the house remains, with its square tower with a dome, and an entrance pavilion. The chapel and the dovecote disappeared, as did some of the original buildings.

Construction of the house took place in two countrysides during the 17th century. The castle has changed hands several times, successively belonging to the families of Cargouët (XIIIth century), Largentaye (XIVth century), Motte (XVth–XVIth centuries), Bertho (XVIth–XVIIth centuries), Sauvaget des Clos (XVIIth–XVIIIth centuries), and finally Froulay (XVIIIth century). These transitions reflect the feudal and then seigneurial history of Brittany, marked by alliances and inheritances.

In 1992, the house corps and the remaining pavilion were listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 25 March. This protection applies specifically to cadastral plots ZO 7 and 8. The site, although partially altered, still bears witness to the aristocratic residential architecture of the seventeenth century in Brittany.

The administrative coordinates place the castle on the town of Meslin (code Insee 22093), in the Côtes-d-D-Armor, although its postal address is often associated with Lamballe-Armor. This localization reflects the complex territorial divisions of the region, where communal boundaries and designations have evolved over the centuries.
