Origin and history
The Château de Cazouls-d'Hérault found its origins in the early 13th century as a Templar Commandery. In 1203, Guillaume de Rocozels, bishop of Béziers, ceded the church of St Peter of Cazouls and its outbuildings to the Templars of Pézenas. It is only after 1225 that a specific commander in Cazouls is mentioned, marking the progressive autonomy of this temple house. Towards the end of the 13th century, it became a bailiff, as evidenced by the archives of the trial of the order.
Upon the dissolution of the Templars, the Commanderie passed to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem in the 14th century. The houses and parishes of Cazouls and d'Usclas then depend on the hospital control of Pézenas. The building underwent major transformations in the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting its adaptation to successive needs and periods. Its current architecture thus blends medieval heritage with later additions.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 1979, the castle retains remarkable elements: a north facade with tower and turret, a chapel, as well as remains of its wall of enclosure with cannon guns. These characteristics illustrate its defensive and religious role throughout the centuries, while emphasizing its heritage importance in the Hérault.
