Origin and history

Le château de Chabanoles is an old house located in Retournac, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it is distinguished by its almost square house body, flanked by two round towers and partly preserved scauguettes. Its entrance gate, adorned with classical sculptures added at the beginning of the seventeenth century, contrasts with defensive vestiges such as figurative consoles, testimonies of its late medieval origin. Inside, woodwork and painted decorations complete this hybrid architectural ensemble, reflecting the successive transformations of the building.

The seigneury of Chabanoles was attested as early as 1190, but the present castle dates mainly from the periods when it belonged to the families of Chabanolles (1309–1534), then to the Terrasses de Chabanolles (1534–1653), of which one member was a royal notary and lieutenant of Roche-en-Régnier. From 1650 on, major renovations modernized the building: the screw staircase was replaced by a straight staircase with a decrypted wall, and the classical gate was added. These changes mark the transition from a defensive function to a more comfortable residential use, typical of the small fortified rural houses in the region.

Ranked a historic monument in 1986, the castle illustrates the architectural and social evolution of the fortified houses in Haute-Loire. Its inscription protects a military heritage at the same time, with elements such as the missing breech but whose supports remain, and civilian, with its interior decorations and its agricultural court. The religious monograms carved on the door lintel also emphasize the influence of the Christian faith in the local seigneurial life, while the animal or human figures of the consoles recall the late handicrafts of the medieval period.

Today, Chabanoles Castle remains a representative example of small rural fortifications adapted to the residential needs of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its history, linked to influential local families, and its mixed architectural features make it a valuable testimony to the noble habitation in Upper Loire during the Renaissance and modern times.
