Origin and history
The château de Chambonnet, located in Dompierre-sur-Besbre in the department of Allier (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), presents itself as a circular brick tower built in the middle of the sixteenth century. Despite its medieval appearance, it was conceived as a residence rather than a fortress, with thin walls and limited defensive elements. A semi hors-oeuvre staircase turret and a covered round road complete its structure, while its interior decor reveals a marked artistic dimension.
The murals made at the end of the sixteenth century, inspired by mythological themes and architectural drawings, were commissioned by the lord of the place. These frescoes, combined with the archaic architectonic building, make this castle an original testimony of the culture and personality of its occupants. The building, including its painted decoration, was listed as historical monuments by order of 9 April 2001.
The location of the castle, at 5052 Champ Bonnet in Dompierre-sur-Besbre, is attested by the Mérimée and Monumentum bases. Although its state of conservation and accessibility to the public are not specified, its heritage inscription underlines its historical and artistic importance in the landscape of the castles of Allier and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
