Château de Chanceaux and its chapel (Box E 37): by order of 22 May 1978

Origin and history

The Manor House of Chanceaux is a building located in Saint-Jouin-de-Blavou, in the department of Orne in Normandy. Built between the 4th quarter of the 16th and 18th centuries, it embodies the typical architecture of Norman manors of this period. The site includes a chapel, a rare element for this type of property, and bears witness to the religious and social importance of its owners.

The mansion and its chapel were classified as historical monuments by order of 22 May 1978. This protection recognizes their heritage value and outstanding conservation status. The classification covers the entire domain, including architectural and decorative elements dated the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Located about 2 km east of the village of Saint-Jouin-de-Blavou, the manor house of Chanceaux is part of a typical rural landscape of the Perche. The region, marked by an agricultural and seigneurial history, sees this type of manorhouse play a central role in the local organization, serving both as an aristocratic residence and as a place of management of the surrounding lands.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight the importance of this monument in the Orne heritage. Although the details of its historical owners or its precise transformations are lacking, its ranking and location make it a privileged witness to the architectural and social history of Lower Normandy.
