Origin and history
The Château de Chargé, located in Razines in Indre-et-Loire, has its origins in the 11th century, when the estate was given to the Abbey of Noyers in 1070. In the 14th century, the castle was built according to a plan that changed little until today. This first medieval building lays the foundations of the current structure, although its precise characteristics remain partially documented.
In the 17th century, the castle underwent a major transformation that gave it its present appearance. The communes and the gate are erected during this period, while the interior is redesigned: redeveloped chimneys, modified openings, and construction of a link building between the dungeon and the northwest wing. A staircase with balusters is also added, reflecting the aesthetic cannons of the era.
The 18th century marked a new phase of modifications, with the enlargement of the north-west wing and the transformation of the chapel. The altar wall is then decorated with murals, dated from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. These developments illustrate the evolution of the tastes and needs of the owners, although their identities are not mentioned in the available sources.
The castle was listed as a historic monument on 17 September 1986, recognizing its heritage value. Among the protected elements is the chapel, classified by decree in the same year. Today, the site retains traces of these different eras, although parts of its history remain fragmentary.
