Origin and history

Châtel-Guyon Castle, located in the municipality of Viersat in the Creuse department, has its origins in the 12th century. Although little information remains about this first construction, it shows a medieval occupation of the site, typical of the local fortifications designed to control the rural territories of the period.

The present castle is mainly the result of a major reconstruction in the seventeenth century. This period corresponds to a time when castles, once defensive in nature, become more comfortable residences, reflecting the changing lifestyles and needs of local elites. Since 1966, the castle has been home to a private psychiatric clinic, founded by Dr Guy Martinat, former intern of the Hospitals of Paris. This reconversion illustrates a frequent trend in the twentieth century, where historical monuments are adapted to modern uses, especially in the medical or tourist field. The clinic thus perpetuates a new life form within these walls full of history.

Around the castle, a 3 km hiking trail, with a elevation of about 475 meters, allows visitors to discover the surrounding landscapes. This course, marked from the village of Viersat, offers a tourist and sports approach to local heritage, combining nature and history.
