Origin and history

Chatoillenot Castle, located in the commune of Val-d'Esnoms (Haute-Marne), is a building built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, reflects the architectural characteristics of its time, with elements such as a wrought iron gate and a southern pavilion. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 26 August 1988 protects the entire castle, as well as specific elements such as the retaining wall of the terrace and a small bridge of the park.

The location of the castle, although specified as satisfactory (note of 7/10), remains approximate, with an address indicated as 4 Rue Joseph Cressot. This type of castle, typical of the eighteenth century, was often linked to the aristocracy or the affluent bourgeoisie of the region, serving as a residence or symbol of prestige. In the context of the Great East, and more specifically the Haute-Marne, these buildings marked the rural landscape and reflected the social and economic dynamics of the time.

The protected elements of Chatoillenot Castle include not only the main building, but also external components such as the wrought iron gate and the park bridge. These architectural and landscape details underline the importance attached to the aesthetics and functionality of noble spaces. The inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments guarantees the preservation of these characteristics, while offering an overview of the art of living and the aspirations of the local elites in the Enlightenment century.
