Origin and history

Chavroches Castle is a castle in ruins located in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 13th century, it dominates the right bank of the Besbre, on a steep hill. Its architecture is characterized by an imposing square dungeon, one of which has an "incoming" W shape, a rare feature. Originally, the enclosure consisted of several towers and a house backed by courtesins, but much of these structures disappeared as early as the 16th century.

The site was once surrounded by walls, of which only a small portion remains today. The entry poterno, dated from the late 12th or early 13th century, is a rare example of military architecture of this time, with a door in the middle of the hanger decorated with floral motifs. The castle served as a seat for one of the most prosperous chestnuts in Bourbonnais, reflecting its strategic and economic importance in the region.

Ranked a Historic Monument since December 9, 1929, Chavroches Castle bears witness to the medieval history of Bourbonnais. The current remains, including the dungeon, a courtine and two partially ruined towers (probably 14th or 15th centuries), offer an overview of its architectural evolution. Although sources do not mention specific characters or events related to its history, its heritage inscription underscores its historical and architectural value.

Today, the castle is located at approximately 7 Montée du Château, 03220 Chavroches, in a state of partially preserved ruins. Its access and conditions of visit are not detailed in the available sources, but its location still dominates the landscape of the Besbre, recalling its past role as a fortress and local administrative center.
