Origin and history

The castle of Coigny, called the old castle, was built around 1600 by Antoine de Franquetot, local lord. This monument of the first half of the seventeenth century is distinguished by its central body surrounded by moat, a Renaissance fireplace classified on the first floor, and spacious commons. It illustrates Norman aristocratic architecture of the time, mixing residential functions and power symbols.

Between 1886 and 1920, the castle housed the departmental school of agriculture and dairy, headed notably by François Noël (1870–1937), mayor of Coigny and general councillor. This reconversion reflects the economic changes in the region, geared towards livestock production and dairy products, as evidenced by the AOP designations butter and cream of Isigny that benefit the territory.

The site is linked to the powerful family of Franquetot, whose members marked the military and political history of France. The county of Coigny was erected as a duchy in 1748 by Louis XV, highlighting the influence of this lineage. Today, the castle combines heritage heritage and contemporary activities, with guest rooms and concerts organized by its owners.

Ranked a historic monument in 1978 for its Renaissance fireplace, the castle is housed in a preserved environment, in the heart of the Marais du Cotentin and Bessin Regional Natural Park. This ecological framework, protected by the Birds and Habitats Directives, strengthens its anchor in a territory where nature and history intersect.

The former commune of Coigny, incorporated in Montsenelle in 2016, also preserves the traces of its medieval past, such as the church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul (XIIIth–XXth centuries) or the cemetery cross (1636). These elements complement the local heritage landscape, dominated by the Franquetot heritage and their role in the Norman nobility.
