The entire dwelling house; the facades and roofs of all the buildings of the communes and the porch; the floor of the courtyard and the two vegetable plots with their fence walls (A 333 to 335): inscription by decree of 25 June 2002

Origin and history

Combettes Castle is a typical example of the rural habitat of the Margeride, a mountainous region of the Central Massif. It consists of a large farm organized around a courtyard almost completely closed, accessible by a covered passage. This type of architecture reflects the defensive and agricultural needs of local communities between the 16th and 17th centuries, a period marked by social tensions and harsh climatic conditions.

The oldest elements of the house could go back to the 16th century, but the majority of the structures visible today – such as the large work, the screwed stair tower, the window frames, as well as the decorations painted on beams and chimneys – seem to date mainly from the 17th century. These architectural features reflect an evolution towards a more comfortable habitat, while maintaining a collective organization typical of the fortified farms of the time.

The castle was partially listed as historical monuments by order of 25 June 2002. This protection applies specifically to the entire house, the facades and roofs of the communes as well as the porch, and the floor of the courtyard with its two vegetable plots and their fence walls. This official recognition underscores the heritage importance of the building as a witness to the rural and architectural history of the Lozère.

The location of the castle, in Estables on the town of Monts-de-Randon, makes it a key part of the historical landscape of the Margeride. Its spatial organization, with buildings arranged in enclosure, suggests a desire to protect property and people, common in rural areas isolated from this period. Interior decorations, such as beams paintings, also indicate a certain economic ease of owners, probably linked to farming or breeding, dominant activities in this region.

The absence of sources detailing the owners or specific events related to the castle limits the knowledge of its social history. However, its inscription as a historical monument makes it possible to envisage further studies to clarify its role in local life, especially during periods of religious unrest or frumentary crises that marked the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie).
