Origin and history

The Château de Condres is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Saint-Bonnet-de-Montauroux, in Lozère, in the Occitanie region. Although its exact period of construction is not specified, it is mentioned in 1459 as belonging to noble Gouin de Sinzelles. This castle was then passed on to the family of Chastel, who ensured its possession for several generations.

In 1645 Louis de Malbec de Montjoc, seigneur of Briges, married Hélène de Chastel de Condres, daughter of Nicolas de Chastel, seigneur of Auroux and Condres. This marriage marks an important milestone in the history of the castle, which remains in the Malbec Montjoc family until the 19th century. Barnabé-Louis-Gabriel-Charles Malbec Montjoc, MP and great-great-great-grandson of Louis de Malbec, still resided there at the time of his marriage in 1816.

The castle is also linked to a major religious figure: the cardinal of Bernis (1715-1794), whose mother, Marie-Élisabeth de Chastel de Condres, was born from this lineage. The castle was classified as a historical monument in 1975, then registered in 2010, before being fully classified in 2011, highlighting its heritage importance.
