Origin and history
Connezac Castle, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, is an emblematic building of the municipality of the same name, located in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This castle, inscribed in historical monuments since 1945, consists of two houses in square, with three pavilions at the end and a courtyard closed by a wall of enclosure. A large terrace in steps adorns the south facade, while a square pavilion with round road on crows marks one of the angles.
Connezac, a rural town without a central village, is crossed by Beaussac Creek and is characterized by a rolling landscape of forests and meadows. The castle, originally linked to a castral chapel (now Saint Martin parish church), reflects the seigneurial architecture of the modern era. The region, marked by limestone sedimentation of the Jurassic, has experienced an ancient human occupation, as evidenced by the remains and transformations of the building.
The castral estate, protected by decree of 23 August 2022, includes not only the castle and its outbuildings, but also a meadow, a pigeon house, and a cuvier. These elements illustrate the economic and social importance of the site, formerly the centre of a local seigneury. The commune, integrated into the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park until 2011, preserves a preserved rural and natural heritage, between the valleys of the Bandiat and the Nizonne.
The administrative history of Connezac, spelled Connesac in 1793, reveals its successive connection to the canton of Larochebeaucourt, then to the canton of Nontron from 1801. The castle, a private property, remains an architectural testimony of the noble and agricultural dynamics that shaped this green Perigord territory.
The commune, exposed to an altered oceanic climate, is also marked by natural hazards such as forest fires or land movements. These environmental constraints, coupled with a low population density (79 inhabitants in 2023), underline the isolated and preserved character of this heritage.
Finally, the castral chapel, which became the parish church of Saint Martin and was restored in 2010, recalls the historical link between seigneurial power and religious life. The site, although not systematically open to the visit, embodies the medieval and modern heritage of this part of the Dordogne.
