Origin and history

Corcelles Castle is a building built between 1905 and 1908 on the former municipality of Saint-Symphorien-lès-Charolles, attached to Charolles in 1896. Located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, it dominates a valley from a hill. Its architecture, of Norman and Gothic neo-regionalist style, reflects the eclectic influences of the Belle Époque. The architect Jean Boirivant designed the plans, incorporating an H-shaped dissymmetry and an interior decor combining neo-Gothic styles, Louis XV and Louis XVI.

The castle has thirty-five rooms spread over three levels, decorated with stained glass and polychrome tiles. Among the remarkable elements are the large hall, the stairwell with its stained glass window, and the dining room, also equipped with stained glass windows. The well and entrance pavilion, with their supporting structures, are part of the protected elements. The building was listed as a historical monument by order of 17 August 2005, thus benefiting from the label "Twentieth Century Heritage".

The painter-glass painter Lucien Bégule contributed to interior decorations, especially stained glass windows, while the architect Jean Boirivant supervised the entire project. The castle illustrates the rise of ambitious private buildings at the beginning of the 20th century, marking a dialogue between regional tradition and architectural modernity. Its registration reflects its heritage value, both for its style and for its state of conservation.

Today, the Château de Corcelles remains a significant example of the Burgundy heritage of the twentieth century, combining historical aesthetics and innovations of its era. Its location, on the heights of Charolles, makes it a local landmark, while emphasizing its anchoring in the architectural history of the region.
