Origin and history
The Château de Corcelles is a building built between 1905 and 1908 by architect Jean Boirivant. It stands in the former commune of Saint-Symphorien-lès-Charolles, attached to Charolles in 1896, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. Its architectural style combines Norman neo-regionalist and Gothic influences, making it a remarkable example of the eclecticism of the early twentieth century.
Located on a hill overlooking a vast valley, the castle offers a remarkable panorama of the surroundings. This strategic positioning, although less crucial in modern times, recalls the historic importance of castles as points of surveillance and prestige in rural landscapes.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 17 August 2005, the Château de Corcelles also benefits from the label "Heritage of the twentieth century". This dual recognition underscores its architectural and heritage importance, while illustrating the desire to preserve the landmark buildings of this period often less prominent than medieval or renaissant periods.
The castle is a testimony of the evolution of architectural tastes at the beginning of the twentieth century, where references to regional and historical styles were reinterpreted to create bourgeois or aristocratic residences. Its inscription among historical monuments protects and enhances this heritage, while offering an overview of the lifestyles and aesthetic aspirations of the time.
