Origin and history
The castle of Couyssels, located in the commune of Roquecor in Occitanie, has its origins in the second half of the 13th century, when knights of the house of Couyssels are attested. Although the current construction mainly dates back to the late 15th century, some parts of the building retain 12th century remains, revealing an earlier occupation of the site. These ancient elements, now missing or used (as at the Château de Quissac in Valeilles), testify to a complex architectural history, mixing reuse and successive transformations.
In the 16th century, the castle took on a major historical dimension under the impetus of Louis de Laval, which made it a high place of regional Protestantism. The meetings of the Reformers held regularly, placing Couyssels in the religious tensions of the time. However, the monument was already abandoned during the French Revolution, sealing its decline. Its ruins, partially preserved, have been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1971, under the cadastral reference A 198. The building thus illustrates the architectural and religious changes of the region between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The location of the castle, although documented (address: 5244 Couysels, 82150 Roquecor), remains of average accuracy (note 7/10), reflecting the limits of available sources. Protected elements are limited to ruins, and no recent information confirms its accessibility to the public or any reassignment (guest rooms, visits). The data come mainly from the Monumentum database and the Merimée archives, associated with Insee code 82151 (Tarn-et-Garonne).
