Origin and history

The Château de Craux is a medieval building located in the commune of Genestelle, in Ardèche, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built 650 metres above sea level on an ancient volcano, it dominates the Volane and Sandron valleys. Surrounded by meadows and a chestnut grove, its strategic location offers an exceptional panorama of the Ardèche Cevennes and the surrounding volcanic landscapes. This site, both isolated and majestic, reflects the importance of relief and nature in the settlement of medieval castles.

The château de Craux found its origins in the 12th century, erected as a hunting relay by the d'Ucel family, co-teachers of Antraigues. Over the centuries, it has undergone major changes by its various owners. In the 18th century, it passed into the hands of the Sauzet family of Fabrias. After the death of his last occupying man, Anne Rosalie Ernestine Madeleine de Sauzet de Fabrias in 1944, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruins. It was only in 1994 that the municipality of Genestelle became its owner and, from 2002, undertook major restoration work to save the house and its towers.

The château de Craux also marked popular culture by setting the film Le Secret de Robert Enrico in 1974, with renowned actors such as Jean-Louis Trintignant, Philippe Noiret and Marlène Jobert. This historic place, between abandonment and rebirth, illustrates both the fragility of the heritage and the local efforts to preserve it. The works, still in progress in the early 2010s, demonstrate the inhabitants' attachment to this emblematic monument of the Ardèche.

Today, the castle of Craux embodies both historical and cinematographic heritage. Its progressive restoration, including the consolidation of the structure and the installation of temporary roofs, aims to restore the site's past glory. Its history, marked by noble families, periods of abandonment and a community renaissance, makes it a symbol of the resilience of the ardèche heritage.
