Origin and history
The château de Cros, also known as château du Cros, is a feudal building located in the commune of Saint-Laurent, about 8 km east of Guéret, in the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This small castle consists of two main towers, including a dungeon, as well as a scauguette on the house, all surrounded by a wall of enclosure still bearing traces of medieval mâchicoulis. Its architecture reflects the typical defensive features of the castles of this time.
The Castle of Cros successively belonged to several families. The first known historical mention dates from 1487, with Simon Fricon, squire and lord of the fief of Cros, quoted in the cartular of the Célestins monks of the Ternes. The estate then passed into the hands of the Tacquenet family, then to Mr Fayolle, the last known lord of these lands. These changes of property illustrate the evolution of local noble families in the late Middle Ages and modern times.
Although modest by its size, the castle of Cros embodies the feudal history of Creuse. Its dungeon and defensive elements, such as mâchicoulis, recall its initial role in protecting and controlling the territory. Today, it bears witness to the medieval architectural heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, often less known than that of other French departments.
