Origin and history
The Château de Fontaine-les-Basset, located in the eponymous commune of the Orne department in Normandy, is a building built in the 18th century. Originally, it was a small fortress, but at the beginning of the 18th century, a new owner began the construction of a stone building, adopting a classic style. This castle is distinguished by a north facade decorated with a forebody surmounted by a triangular pediment, framed by pilasters and curved bays.
Inside, the stone staircase, with a wrought iron ramp, and the large living room with woodwork carved in natural pitchpin, inspired by the Louis XVI style, testify to the architectural refinement of the period. These elements, along with the northern façade and its roof, were listed as historic monuments by order of 29 August 1984, highlighting their heritage value.
The castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences in Normandy, from defensive structures to recreational residences reflecting the artistic tastes of the eighteenth century. Its architecture and interior decorations make it a representative example of Norman classical heritage, marked by the influence of royal styles, especially that of Louis XVI.
