Origin and history

The Château de Fourolles is a 17th century building located in the commune of Saint-Aubin-Château-Neuf, in the department of Yonne, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This monument, typical of the classical architecture of the period, belonged to notable families such as the La Salle and the Soufflot de Magny, reflecting the importance of large local families in the construction of the regional heritage.

The castle was listed as a historic monument on 17 February 1989, a recognition that protects its facades, roofs, staircase and moat. This protection highlights the architectural and historical value of the site, while ensuring its preservation for future generations. The protected elements underline the importance of the defensive and aesthetic structures of the time.

The domain of Fourolles illustrates the role of castles in the social and economic organization of Burgundy in the seventeenth century. At that time, these residences often served as administrative and agricultural centres for local lords, while embodying their power and prestige. Their presence also marked the rural landscape, where agriculture and livestock were the main activities of the surrounding populations.
