Origin and history

The Château de Franc-Séjour is a strong house built at the end of the 15th century, more precisely during its 4th quarter. Located in the commune of Thiers, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this monument illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late medieval era. The estate consists of a castle organized around an inner courtyard, surrounded by four building bodies and flanked by two towers, typical of the constructions of this period.

The site integrates into a larger complex including a landscaped park, gardens, a vegetable garden, ponds, a fountain and fence walls. The commons, arranged around a second inner courtyard, complement this spatial organization. Together, including decorated interiors (such as the paneled dining room or green living room) and hydraulic elements, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 12 February 2002.

This type of strong house reflects the lifestyle of local elites in the late Middle Ages, combining residential, agricultural and defensive functions. Thiers, a city known for its artisanal and metallurgical activity from that time on, provided a framework for the establishment of such areas, symbols of power and economic prosperity in a region marked by trade and manufacturing production.
