Origin and history

Fresnay Castle, located 1.2 km north of Bourgneuf-la-Forêt in Mayenne, is mentioned by cartographers such as Hubert Jaillot and the Cassini Map. He was a fief dependent on the seigneury of La Forêt and Ernée's chestnut. In 1492 the Lord of Frênay installed a seat at the chanceau of the church, recognizing the rights of the Lord of La Forêt. This fief, though modest, allowed its owners to free themselves from their vassality.

The present 17th-century castle has a double pavilion architecture. He was looted on 30 August 1792 by national guards, and his servants were arrested in May 1793 for sheltering the Cottereau brothers, figures of the Chouannerie. Despite the demands of the owners, the castle remained associated with this counter-revolutionary movement, the authorities claiming that it was its cradle.

The chapel of the castle, dedicated to Saint Anne, was served by chaplains such as Jean Bresteau (1677) or Jean-Pierre Desdouet, deported to England in 1793. The estate, including communes, a park, a pool and aisles, was classified as a Historic Monument in 1994. It symbolizes the turbulent history of Mayenne during the Revolution and Chouannery.
