Origin and history

The castle of Fretaise, also known as the castle of Fretaize, is a monument in ruins located in the municipality of Ronnet, in the department of Allier. It occupies a strategic position on a terrace in the middle of a hill, overlooking a valley today submerged by a pond. Its location, 2.5 km southwest of the village, suggests a defensive or monitoring role in its local historical context.

Currently, the castle is reduced to its dungeon, with other architectural elements – enclosures, towers and ditches – having disappeared over time. Although its detailed history is not explicitly documented in the available sources, its residual structure bears witness to an ancient occupation, typical of medieval castles in the Bourbonnaise region. These buildings often served as checkpoints for local lords or refuges in times of conflict.

The site is mentioned in regional works such as Châteaux, fiefs, mottes, fortified houses and manor houses in Bourbonnais (2004), which lists it among the Castleous remains of the Allier. Its present state makes it a partial testimony of medieval military architecture, without specific events or characters being explicitly associated with it in the sources consulted.
